SAFE - TRANSIT

SAFE-TRANSIT – SAfety and Feasibility of Early TRANSITion to occlusion pressure-guided assisted ventilation

a multicenter randomized pilot study

The SAFE-TRANSIT study is investigating a new approach to the transition from controlled to assisted ventilation in intensive care units. This transition is crucial for patients, as prolonged controlled ventilation can weaken the respiratory muscles, while a premature or uncontrolled transition could endanger the lungs through excessive spontaneous breathing. The SAFE-TRANSIT concept focuses on precise control of ventilation and sedation using occlusion pressures. Respiratory drive and effort are measured directly on the ventilator in order to individually adjust mechanical support and drug sedation so that the patient breathes within a physiological and safe range. This multicenter pilot study is testing in practice whether a protocol-controlled, early transition to occlusion pressure-controlled ventilation can be safely implemented. The aim is to lay the foundation for improved ventilation practices that promote recovery of the respiratory muscles while protecting the lungs.

SAFE-TRANSIT is the PV Group's first PROVEnet study.
